MT. sac recap

10/25/2015

Mt. SAC played host to the largest group of XC runners in the nation this past weekend. With the high school portion of the meet split between Friday and Saturday, Brea-Olinda made a strong statement the first day of racing.

Our first race with a complete team was the boys JV Open which BOHS won with a very low score of 21 points. Senior Michael Hannum led 1,2,3 finish followed closely by Steve Clark and Dylan Perlson.

In the girls Frosh/Soph race the young ladies were led by Lara Makki in a great Mt. SAC debut time of 24:07. Sydney Aston, Christina Grattan, Emma Brookman and Isabella Smith rounded out the scoring.
The boy's freshmen race saw BOHS place 3rd led by they 9th place finish of Nolan Orozco. Adan Villanueva, Mason Harding, Anthony Candelario and Noah Tamagno all finished in the top 35 to complete our scoring.
The next group to toe the line truly showed our depth in the JV National Championships. This group of athletes would have beat 2 teams in the Varsity Sweepstakes race and could have won a D3 Varsity race earlier in the day. Sophomore Jon Tobin ran a measured first mile and then set the course on fire with a first place finish in 16:33. Drew Apahidean, Joe Bianchi and John David Stendahl filled the next 3 places completing a stunning 1, 2, 3, 4 finish for BOHS. Senior Oscar Ramirez rounded out the scoring with a stelar 10th place finish in a race with over 100 competitors.
The girls JV National Championships saw our ladies place second to La Costa Canyon (ranked #3 in the State for DIII). Leading the way was standout freshman, Bella Gardner who finished 4th in a time of 20:56 earning her the 6th fastest time in school history at Mt. SAC for freshman. Vivan Kim, Lin Yi Recinos (season debut), Kayla Libed and Lauren Blake helped secure our highest finish in this race in recent history. It should be noted that this team would have beat a team in the Sweepstakes race as well.
The much anticipated Varsity races provided plenty to be proud of. The ladies are currently ranked #9 in the State for DIII and entered Mt. SAC with a bit to prove. In only her second race of her high school career, senior Sophie Tsabadze, was the first finisher for Brea-Olinda in a time of 18:59. Just a fraction of a second behind was team-captain Carly Halm who also ran 18:59. The next pair to finish was Meredith Lehman and Kylee Grubbs both were also were awarded identical times of 19:40. Our last scorer for the ladies was Hannah Batchelor who was able to walk down a few girls in the gauntlet securing a narrow 5th place finish. The ladies churned out the 4th fastest team time in school history and the fastest since 2006. Tsabadze's time is the 7th fastest in school history while her team mate, Halm, remains #3 on the all-time list.
Last but certainly not least was the #1 DIII team and defending State Champions. National record holder, individual State XC and 1600m champion, Mt. SAC course record holder and future President, Austin Tamagno, put on a clinic along with his top ranked team. At the 2014 edition of Mt. SAC Tamagno opted to run on Saturday in the DI Sweepstakes race taking on the best competition and leaving with his historical course record. In 2015 Tamagno chose to race Friday night with his team and not a single top competitor in the state reciprocated his 2014 accommodation. After a "conservative" opening mile of 4:47 Tamagno was already separated from the pack, carried only by a the feverish cheers of the masses who were watching greatness glide on down the road. 14:36 was needed for Tamagno to cover the course and an additional 1:19 for our 5th runner to cross the line. When the points and time were calculated we won by 55 points and ran the 2nd fastest time in school history. Gio Orellana muscled  his way over the 2.95 mile course nursing a tight leg. The 5th ranked runner in the State is sure to rebound at CIF Finals and move his way further up the top 10 list. Sophomore Kevin McNulty competed in his second race for Brea-Olinda finishing 3rd for the Wildcats and securing the 11th fastest time in school history; 3rd all-time for sophomores. Mr. California, Joe Tobin, continued his stellar season with a 15:45 which was good for the 13th fastest time in school history. Caleb Myers was our last scorer placing 18th and running the 17th fastest time in school history and the 9th fastest time for Juniors at Mt. SAC.

Looking forward we have league finals on Tuesday 11/3 for the ladies and Wednesday 11/4 for the gentlemen. Both races will start at 1:00 and be held at Yorba Regional park. Thanks for reading and your continued support of our program.
