Thank you once again to Alex Fong for putting these wonderful videos together for the boys xc banquet! Below is also a link to all the pictures he took from this season! 2018 Boys XC Photos California State Championship is not just another race, It is a race for those teams who have trained long and hard, for those who put in 60 to 70 + miles a week, and who have the strength to outperform their competitors. The Brea Varsity team came in ranked 9th in the California Div 3 teams. The team stepped to the line and did not hold back. They gave it everything in their body and ended with 8th place out of the 24 teams that competed in the division 3 state meet.
Shane Gaffikin led the team with a finishing time of 16:01 and 21st place finish. Despite battling a sickness that week, Jonathan Manara did what he had to do for the team and finish 42nd with a time of 16:22. Ryan Daedler with his almighty speed, passed his competition and scored a time of 16:44 placing 74th for the team. Manny Debarros coming out as the second fastest freshman in his division, placing 87th, and achieving a time of 16:51 as a freshmen perfectly showed how amazing and tough Manny is to his competitors and we are very excited to see his continuous success during track next year. Jack Hannum racing his last race of the season, proved victorious as he achieved a time of 16:54 with a placement of 93rd; Jacks effort throughout this season and his dedication truly helped Jack stand out from the rest of the athletes and Jack will be truly missed once he departs to college. Matthew Apahidean (17:21. Placement 137) and Carlos Perez (18:01. Placement 178) also helped contribute towards benefitting our team towards placing 8th and these quick athletes will be highly anticipated to achieve great success during track season! The team's effort during this season and dedication to this program proved to be fantastic. Our future success and dedication to this sport will most definitely carry us to that State Championship title next year and if our team continues to put in the effort and do everything the coach tells us to to, that state title shall not be difficult to achieve. Our team being the youngest team to race at state this year truly proves our teams strength, and next year a majority of our other division 3 competitors will fear what we will be capable of next year! Finishing off the last meet of their season, the frosh/soph team came out victorious! The Brea frosh/soph team scored second overall which in comparison, completely showed the capabilities and the strengths of the Boy’s Frosh/Soph team. From the very beginning of their training, a majority of the frosh/soph members from our team focused towards achieving great success and put in all the effort towards training for cross country. The returning sophmores understood the amount of work that had to be put in to improve their previous times. Since the sophomores understood this, many sophomores this season stepped up their game for the greatness of the team. Overall the dedication that came out of these sophomores and the dedication that was shown by these sophomores during their final race proved to be outstanding. The newly introduced freshmen also proved to be a tight pack of talented runners. Our freshmen completely stuck close to each other during this race and because of this strategy, a majority of these freshmen learned how to become skilled and strong during tough races. Overall the amount of effort expressed from the frosh/soph athletes proved to be impactful towards their final race and these individuals will continue their impressive speed during track next season!
The Varsity Boys team at Crestview League Finals proved to be an efficient pack today as they successful brought their team towards achieving third place at league and ultimately caused a majority of their own teammates to achieve great prs. Our team proved to be perfectly skilled at Crestview and all of our varsity teams will have absolutely no competition on our hands once we race at CIF Preview. The JV team asserted absolute dominance in the race as the top 3 Brea runners finished 1,2, and 3. From mile 1 on, Andrew Velasco and Jordan Ostby took off leaving the rest of the race in the dust. The Brave and Bold Jack Hannum held all of his strength and completely unleashed this strength against his opponents to help place second for his team and place 16th overall. Jonathan Manara, recently recovering from an injury, showed that he still has incredible speed in him and helped push the team towards receiving that 3rd placement, placing 24th overall. Ryan Daedler, Manny DeBarros, Matthew Apahidean, and Carlos Perez sticking as a pack and pushing the team along helped all of us to qualify for CIF Finals. Most importantly, Carlos Perez, with his incredible Riverside peak of 16:21 at a difficult course, and Matthew Apahidean continuing to help the team be successful. Our qualification towards State came very close, to qualify among division, only the top seven teams go to state. Luckily, with the power of teamwork and an incredible training effort, our team locked in that 5th place title and our Varsity boys are taking a trip to Fresno! Jordan Ostby with an incredible time of 17:22 ran his way towards sixth place as he completely abolished any hill that attempted to slow him down. Aakash Kadakia ran just under 18 minutes with an out of this world time of 17:59, proving the other teams that nothing will bring Aakash down. The varsity team went up to the line short two athletes. Jonathan Manara and Carlos Perez could not compete because illness and injury, putting the pressure on the others to pick up the slack. Manny DeBarros wrapped up the team of five with a time of 17:06 - his first race on this course. Matthew Apahidean finished fifteen seconds earlier at 16:51. Ryan Daedler stuck on Jack Hannum the entire race, finishing only seconds apart at 16:18 (Ryan) and 16:15(Jack). Shane Gaffikin finished first for Brea. He finished with a time of 16:10, first for Brea, and 24th overall. The team finished ninth. The freshman were able to show their skills at one the toughest courses in the nation. Jeremy Guerrero came in first for the team and a impressive 13th place finish with a time of 18:34. Scoring second for the team was Benji Garner, who ran a 20:53, showed how he can handle the hills. Andrew Kim and Eric Lee tagged team to the finish and ran times of 22:29 and 22:38. The other duo in that race was Joseph Dalman and Chris Landreth who both finished in 24:31 and 24:41. The team was rounded off by freshman Jayden Rios and Carson Neinhouse. The Frosh-Soph team looks bright for the future with many PR to come their way. Orange County Championships was quite a muddy adventure that involved steep hills and slippy pathways, but that did not stop our outstanding freshman from completing and racing this incredibly dangerous course. Eric Lee, who raced through not only a difficult course but a incredibly muddy course, got a pr of 21:02 and Carson Nienhouse with a time of 23:20 not too far behind from Eric also gained a sweet and absolutely incredible PR. Jaden Rios (25:34) and Thomas Park (26:39) also accomplished an impressive race working together. This meet might have not had the best conditions nor the greatest weather, but that did not stop the freshmen from providing impressive racing results.
The varsity team went into the race without their number two man, Jonathan Manara, but still had high hopes. Shane Gaffikin finished first for Brea and twenty-fifth overall with a time of 15:25. Next for Brea was Matthew Apahidean with a time of 16:02. Ryan Daedler surged past his teammates in the last mile to finish at 16:14, followed closely by Manuel DeBarros at 16:18. Carlos Perez and Luke Stratton were right behind him, finishing with times of 16:28 and 16:32. Freshman Manny DeBarros and junior Shane Gaffikin both received All-County Honors. Sac for the weekend! |
